Painted ladie’s garden - Le Jardin de la Belle-Dame

Ecosystem to promote habitat for butterflies and other pollinators.

The Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui, a migratory butterfly, is capable of travelling between 12,000 km and 14,000 km round trip to cross the Sahara Desert and reach Europe. (Study published in June 2021 in the American journal PNAS — record for the longest insect migration.)

Inspired by the magnificent carpet from Belvoir Castle dating from 1898, the Painted lady garden invites visitors to discover the calla, also known as The Calla Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) Spreng.), a species from the Araceaefamily native to South Africa (where it is no longer found). Featuring a pattern of white flowers swirling among a lushy green foliage, the carpet — restored in 2025 by the association of the "American Friends of Belvoir Castle" — is in the "Regents Gallery," which can be visited at the castle. In 1826, Austrian botanist Sprengel created the genus Zantedeschia as a tribute to Italian botanist and doctor Giovanni Zantedeschi, originally from Verona, who first discovered it.

Zantedeschia aethiopica grows naturally along stream banks or near ponds. Its pollination system involves several unexpected players: beetles, spiders, and frogs.

A Korean study published in June 2023 (Korean Journal of Agricultural Science) reveals that the aethiopica species — one of the 8 species within the genus Zantedeschia — has medicinal properties, notably the presence of polyphenols and antioxidants in both the flower and the leaf, across 11 cultivars studied.

In Greek, calla means beauty. In Greek mythology, it is said to have bloomed from the divine milk of Hera, Queen of the Heavens. The calla would not simply have been born from the earth and seeds, but from the gods. The story begins when Zeus, eager to grant immortality to his mortal son Heracles, placed the child against the breast of Hera, his wife, without her knowledge, while she slept. He hoped the child would nurse and absorb the strength of the gods. But when Hera awoke and realized, she was nursing another woman's child, she pushed him away in a surge of fury and pain. Her milk spilled across the sky, and from this sacred spray the Milky Way was born — and a few drops fell to earth, and wherever they touched the ground, a white and radiant flower emerged: the calla lily. The flower as a weapon of self-assertion.:

The wild calla, Calla palustris, protected in France since 1950 due to the threat of extinction at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, is seeing its populations recover. It is a semi-aquatic plant found in peat bogs and ponds: anti-pollutant, filtering, with heart-shaped leaves. It originates from the Vosges Massif in France (discovered in 1753 by C.V. Linné). It has medicinal properties (flour) and its pollination system through thermogenesis makes it a real attraction for pollinators.

Water trickling over a black granite stone, powered by solar energy, will offer a meditative space. A red thread will be laid on the stone as a reminder of the carpet pattern from the Regents Gallery, which you can go and admire during a visit to Belvoir Castle. A small bamboo pond, evoking the passage of life, will cover the wetland area. Tea is available for all visitors. The garden is accessible to wheelchair users.

La Belle-Dame, Vanessa cardui, papillon migrateur, est capable de parcourir entre 12.000km et 14.000km aller-retour pour traverser le désert du Sahara et rejoindre l’Europe. (Étude publiée en juin 2021, dans la revue américaine PNAS - record de la plus longue migration d’insectes).

En nous inspirant du magnifique tapis du Château de Belvoir datant de 1898, le jardin de la Belle-Dame propose de découvrir la calla aussi appelée Arum blanc, Arum d’Éthiopie, Richarde (Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) Spreng.) une espèce de la famille des Araceae originaire d’Afrique du Sud (mais n’y est plus présente). Au motif de fleurs blanches virevoltant entre un feuillage verdoyant, le tapis restauré en 2025 par l’association des “American Friends of Belvoir Castle”, se trouve dans la « Regents Gallery » qui se visite au château. En 1826, le botaniste autrichien Sprengell crée le genre Zantedeschia en hommage, au botaniste et médecin italien Zantedeschi Giovanni originaire de Vérone, qui l’a découverte.

Zantedeschia aethiopica pousse naturellement en bord de ruisseau ou près des étangs. Son système de pollinisation implique plusieurs acteurs inattendus coléoptères, araignées et grenouilles.

Une étude coréenne, publiée en juin 2023 (Korean Journal of Agricultural Science) révèle que l’espèce aethiopica, (l’une des 8 espèces que comporte le genre Zantedeschia) a des propriétés médicinales, notamment la présence de polyphénol et antioxydant tant dans la fleur que dans la feuille et ceux sur 11 cultivars étudiés.

Calla en grec signifie beauté. Dans la mythologie grecque, on dit qu'elle aurait fleuri du lait divin d'Héra, reine des cieux. La calla ne serait pas simplement née de la terre et des graines, mais des dieux.

L'histoire commence lorsque Zeus, désireux d'immortalité pour son fils mortel Héraclès, plaça l'enfant contre la poitrine de Héra, sa femme, à son insu pendant son sommeil. Espérant que l'enfant allaiterait et absorberait la force des dieux.

Mais quand Héra se réveilla et réalisa qu'elle allaitait l'enfant d'une autre femme, elle le repoussa dans un élan de fureur et de douleur. Son lait se répandit dans le ciel, et de cette gerbe sacrée naquit la Voie Lactée, et quelques gouttes tombèrent sur terre et, là où elles touchèrent le sol, émergea une fleur blanche et rayonnante, le lys calla. La fleur comme arme d’affirmation de soi.

Le genre Calla des marais, Calla palustris, protégée en France depuis 1950 car menacée de disparition fin du 19s début du 20e, rétablit ses populations. C’est une plante semi-aquatique que l’on trouve en tourbière et étangs : anti-polluante, filtrante, dont les feuilles sont en forme de coeur. Il est originaire du massif Vosgiens en France (découverte en 1753 par c.v.Linné.) Il a des vertus médicinales (farine) et son système de pollinisation par thermogénèse en fait un réel attrait pour les pollinisateurs.

L’eau ruisselante sur une pierre de granit noire, fonctionnant à l’énergie solaire, offrira un espace méditatif.

Un fil rouge sera disposé sur la pierre pour rappeler le motif du tapis de la Regents Gallery que vous pouvez aller admirer lors d’une visite au Château de Belvoir.

Un petit pond en bambou évoquant le passage de la vie, couvrira la zone humide.

Un thé est à disposition de tous les visiteurs. Le jardin est accessible aux personnes en fauteuil roulant.
